Taking a cue from my colleague from Dotted i Design, Michael Samuelson, I have gone a little bit charcoal rainbow crazy. The default color scheme in X-Chat leaves something to be desired if you are constantly looking at the screen. If you are like me, tweaking colors is one big rabbit hole! Once I started, I kept tweaking and tweaking for over an hour. Here is a screenshot of what I ended up with:

If anybody would like to use a similar color scheme in their copy of xchat, you simply need to replace the colors.conf file with the following values:
color_0 = cccc cccc cccc
color_1 = 0000 0000 0000
color_2 = d6d6 8d8d 1d1d
color_3 = dcdc fdfd 9999
color_4 = c3c3 3b3b 3b3b
color_5 = c7c7 3232 3232
color_6 = 8000 2666 7fff
color_7 = dcdc fdfd 9999
color_8 = d999 a6d3 4147
color_9 = 3d70 cccc 3d70
color_10 = 199a 5555 5555
color_11 = 2eef 8ccc 74df
color_12 = d6d6 8d8d 1d1d
color_13 = 7070 9090 7070
color_14 = 4c4c 4c4c 4c4c
color_15 = 9595 9595 9595
color_16 = cccc cccc cccc
color_17 = 0000 0000 0000

File Locations:
- Windows Vista, the file is located at C:\Users\
\AppData\Roaming\X-Chat 2\colors.conf - openSuse ~/.xchat2/colors.conf
- Kubuntu ~/.xchat2/colors.conf
- Other Linux distros can use find / -name ‘colors.conf’ from the command line to find the file’s location
- Mac OSX - I use Colloquy for IRC, but will update this page if I remember to install and test X-Chat Aqua

Great color scheme!
Thanks for this. You came up high on google when I was searching for explanations for the color numbers. This will do just nicely! I added it to StumbleUpon.
More Appealing
It definitely looks a lot easier to read! Certainly is much more appealing than the original version...
Hi, Thanks for very
Hi, Thanks for very interesting article. I really enjoyed reading all of your articles.
RE: 1st Comment
@iluzjonista
- Thanks man, I enjoy reading them myself. Just to let you know, your post seemed a little bit like comment spam and I had some concerns posting it. However, you were my first commenter since moving my blog content from my former business site into my personal site and that left a special space in my heart. Therefore, I left the comment but removed the link to your website (sorry, I just didn't have time to click on it either) to give you even less Google juice than you would have had otherwise. Not that you would of had much at this point in time anyways with my current PageRank of 0. :-(
First real comment?
Hi your articles are very interesting, and I would enjoy subscribing to your newsletter.
Just kidding! Am I your first comment, sah-weet! Well I did this colors.conf thing, and I likes it, tweaked it to my tastes a bit, but I like it nonetheless. Maybe you should blog about what each color changes, cause I gots no idea.
